What’s the difference between a hand towel and a tea towel?

  • Whilst hand towels and tea towels ultimately have the same purpose of being absorbent, they are generally used in different areas of the home. To start, tea towels are typically thinner in weight and denser in feel as they are woven flat. This makes them relatively lint-free so a trail of lint is not left on your dishes or kitchen counters.
  • In contrast, hand towels are meant for drying your hands or face in the bathroom. They are usually made in a heavier weight, and typically woven with loops, which are tightly sewn together to make them more absorbent.
  • We recommend keeping hand towels and tea towels separate so you are not transferring bacteria from different areas of your home.

Which tea towels are the most absorbent?

  • Overall, all tea towels are absorbent as their primary function is drying dishes. However, different tea towels are better suited for different purposes. For example, a great option for everyday use is cotton tea towels, which are typically thinner and are woven flat. This tighter weave makes them not just absorbent but also able to withstand wash after wash.
  •  If you are looking for a tea towel that can tackle bigger spills then you cannot go wrong with either a terry-towelling cotton tea towel or alternatively a microfibre tea towel.
  • A terry towelling (or terry cloth) tea towel is woven with loops of cotton thread, which are then tightly sewn together. This allows the tea towel to absorb more. However, it is worth noting that terry tea towels do take a little extra time to dry and may sometimes leave some lint behind. For a more quick-drying and lint-free option, microfibre will be the best fit for you. As microfibre tea towels are plusher and do not have the same dense weave as a traditional cotton tea towel, they are ideal for dealing with larger spills.
