What is a Quilt?

  • A quilt, which is also known as a duvet or a doona here in Australia, is essentially a filled bag that sits within a quilt cover and lays on top of all your bedding. Its primary purpose is to provide you with some level of warmth. When choosing what quilt is best suited to your needs, you should consider three things; its fill, weight and size.

Why do Australians call a duvet a doona?

  • The word "doona" actually comes from a Danish brand name that became popular in Australia.
  • It stuck, and now Aussies use "doona" instead of "duvet," similar to how "Esky" is used for a cooler.
  • While "quilt" is also used interchangeably, "doona" remains the go-to word in most Australian households. So, if you're shopping for bedding in Australia, look for a doona cover it’s the same as a duvet cover!

What's the difiference between doona's ,quilt and duvets?

  • In Australia, a doona, quilt, and duvet all refer to the same thing—a thick, padded blanket filled with down, wool, or synthetic fibres, designed to keep you warm.
  • "Duvet" is the common term in Europe, while "quilt" is often used in the US and Australia.
  • However, a quilt can also refer to a decorative, lightweight bedspread. So, if you’re shopping in Australia, "doona" or "quilt" means the same as a duvet!

How do I Choose the Right Size Quilt?

  • Quilts are typically always sold in mattress sizes. While you can always go for the same size as your mattress, we always recommend that your quilt be one size larger than your mattress unless you are shopping for a single-sized quilt

What's the best doona for all year round?

  • The best doona for all year round is one that balances breathability and insulation  keeping you cosy in winter and cool in summer. Look for natural, temperature-regulating fibres like bamboo, cotton, or feather and down blends. These materials adapt to your body heat, making them perfect for Australia’s changing seasons.

    At Manchester Factory, we recommend

  • Bamboo Quilts: Naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and hypoallergenic. Great for hot sleepers or those wanting year-round comfort without overheating.

  • Feather & Down Quilts: Light and lofty with excellent insulation. Choose a medium-weight option for year-round use.

  • Tip: Pair with breathable sheets like bamboo Egyptian cotton to enhance comfort no matter the season.
